The Foundation for Legal Research provides funds for legal research falling into three broad categories, namely:
The goal of the Foundation is to encourage legal writing that would be valuable to Canadian lawyers and judges in their day-to-day practice of law and in the administration of justice.
The Foundation was created in 1957. It is supported by Life Fellows and members who belong to the legal profession acrosss Canada who believe in the importance of legal research.
The Foundation's grants are normally in the range of $5,000. The Foundation does not reject applications for smaller amounts, but rarely makes larger grants because of the limited amount of money available. Most applicants are law teachers in Canada seeking funding for summer research.
The annual deadline for receipt of applications is February 11, so that the Foundation can make its decisions by mid-March. To apply, please download the application form by clicking on Application for Grant below. If you can't obtain a form, please contact the Honourable Mr. Justice Nicholas Kasirer's assistant Francine Gagnon, at firstname.lastname@example.org.
If a grant is authorized, the Foundation will expect progress reports at suitable intervals and a completion report accompanied by a copy of the resulting book, article, thesis, etc. Recipients of grants should keep a complete account of the expenditures of their grant, and must submit a report on completion together with receipts wherever possible to the Foundation.
